Working with Commonwealth Projects, we helped shape the concept for Rihanna’s Grammy performance as a shared search for clarity in a noisy world.
The staging treats the song as an inner journey, asking what feels real and what is constructed in the environments we move through.
Against a dim blue backdrop printed with a theater interior, Rihanna performs inside a tight cone of light that feels intimate and slightly nostalgic, while the larger set holds a quiet tension. As the performance builds, performers tear down a paper-printed wall, allowing light to break through and reveal what sits behind the façade. Simple tools like printed wallpaper, staged removal, and carefully tuned lighting create a live “before and after” onstage, with costumes echoing the blurred imagery to suggest a subconscious world coming into focus in real time.
